Imprints & Abstractions
Maximum Security Cell Block + the Bullpen
Grateful to have this extraordinary opportunity to exhibit my Imprints & Abstractions work in the recently decommissioned Maximum Security Prison in Carson City, NV. I can’t imagine a better space to contemplate the very real issues surrounding our justice system.
This work began in 2011-2012 after I spent a winter photographing in Detroit. While there, I found several files with ruined mugshots and other images, as well as printed documents (arrest records etc) in an abandoned police station which has since been demolished. Later, I began working with the materials I’d found in an effort to explore photography’s relationship to ideas of criminality and the process of aesthetic criminalization.
